Darwin Eugene Damon, son of Elsie Mae Dixon and Grant Edward Damon was born on May 5, 1930, in Chariton. The Lord called him home on Aug. 17, 2006, at the age of 76.

Darwin received his early education from Freedom and Union Country Schools then graduated from Melcher High School in 1949. He lived his entire life in the Melcher area other than serving in the Army from 1951-1953.

On Oct. 18, 1953, he married Kathryn McAnelly at the United Brethren Church in Seymour. They spent 50 plus years farming east of Melcher. Darwin enjoyed the country life and the many friends he made along the way. He was a life long member of the Dallas Christian Church.

Positions and memberships he held, included: 4H leader, Farm Bureau, Iowa Cattleman's Association, Rural Water board, Central Hawkeye Gas Engine and Tractor, The Allis Connection, Chapter 5 IHC Collectors, Chariton River Valley Tractor Club.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy, sons: Mike (Barb) of Knoxville, Todd (Christy) of Atkins, and Jim (Kim) of Green Castle, Pa.; nine grandchildren; a sister-in-law Shirley (Allen) Ricketts of Moline; a brother-in-law Lawrence McAnelly of Des Moines and many other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Grant & Elsie Damon, one son, Kelly J. Damon, and one brother Dwaine Damon.

Funeral services were held for Darwin on Aug. 21 at the Dallas Christian Church in Melcher-Dallas. Burial was in the Dallas Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Dallas Christian Church or the Columbia Fire Department.
