Gordon MacKenzie Arnott was born on Aug. 11, 1921, to Gordon and Myrtle Arnott in Lakefield, Quebec, Canada. He died near Portland, Ore., on June 23 at the age of 84.

He began his pre-med education at Atlantic Union College in Massachusetts in 1940 but this was cut short by a stint in the U.S. Army. During this time he married Lillian Remick. Gordon attended several colleges while in the Army and was able to attend The College of Medical Evangelists School of Medicine now known as Loma Linda University School of Medicine, Loma Linda, Calif. graduating in 1949.

Gordon did his internship in Vancouver, British Columbia and then moved his family to Toronto, Ontario, where he began his medical practice in Willowdale. It was his dream to start a Seventh-Day Adventist hospital there and after teaming up with Dr. Erwin Crawford, they bought 55 acres of land and started the North York Branson Hospital. Many miracles took place before this was accomplished and he loved to tell them to people. Gordon lived there for 10 years.

In 1960 he married Joan Masat and they moved to Knoxville where he practiced medicine for about 40 years. He had boundless energy and was always involved in some sort of ministry to help others. Gordon drew the plans for many churches and schools in Iowa, Canada and New York state.

He was interested in Lifestyle Medicine and gave many talks encouraging people to eat healthfully, exercise, get proper rest etc. He helped with many cooking classes and programs to help people stop smoking. He was able to do this twice in Russia and once in Romania - trips that he enjoyed very much. Gordon was very active in the Knoxville Seventh-Day Adventist church and he had a close relationship with God and loved to study the Bible.

He was highly respected as a physician and provided care to thousands of patients. Gordon provided an example of Christ's caring to all he met. He forgave renters who could not pay, sent people to fill up their cars on his gas account, loaned money without being paid back and treated everyone with respect. Gordon enjoyed many hobbies including gardening, oil painting, bird carving, photography, nature study and most of all he enjoyed singing and did so for many churches and funerals in the area.

Gordon is survived by his wife, Joan; his children, Cheryl Einerson, Larry Arnott, Gary Arnott, Kerry Arnott, Rhonda Berman, Kathy Siewert, Randy Arnott, Gordon Arnott, Jr. and Timothy Arnott; 17 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; his sister, Frances Blahovich and a brother, Lorne Arnott.

Memorial services were held in Vancouver, Wash., on June 25, 2006. Condolences may be sent to the family - Joan Arnott, 21258 S.E. Lansing Lane, Boring, Ore. 97009.
