Albert Van Zitteren was born Jan. 9, 1943, in South Dakota, the son of Leo and Gertrude (Mettler) Van Zitteren.

He was raised in the Modesto and Turlock, Calif., areas. Albert worked at the freight docks and drove a semi for many years.

He married Marcia Erickson on Oct. 28, 1967. In 1972, the couple moved from Whittier, Calif., to the Pleasantville area. Albert drove for American Freight and then for Crause Cartage Co. before retiring seven years ago.

On the side, he farmed and raised cattle. He enjoyed boating, gardening, cooking and traveling. Albert was a member of the Teamsters Local #147.

Albert died Friday, June 23, in Des Moines at the age of 63.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife in November 2004.

He is survived by his children, Andrew Van Zitteren and Deanna (Ben) Burgin, all of Pleasantville; brother, James Van Zitteren and sister, Ramona Watson, both of California; six grandchildren, Ross and Eric (Fran) Isley, Andrew and Kyle Van Zitteren, Raylynn Quinn and Tiffany Van Zitteren; one great-grandson; an aunt, Idella Mettler of California and many other family members and friends.

Funeral services were held in Pleasantville on Tuesday, June 27, with Pastor John Claussen officiating. Internment was in Avondale Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Pleasantville EMS.
