Gladys Mae Steenhoek was born on September 1, 1933, south of Pella, Iowa. Her parents were Hubert J. and Johanna Whillamena Kamerick Steenhoek who had five younger sons: Marvin LeRoy, Raymond Jay, Wayne Edward, and twins: Robert Gene and Ronald Dean Steenhoek.

Gladys received a grade school education at the Silver Grove and Richland Country Grade Schools. She along with her younger brothers made their home with their parents during their adolescent years. As they grew up she and her parents and her two brothers, Wayne and Robert, continued living together as a family.

Gladys did babysitting and housecleaning during her younger years and then began working at Liter Cleaners. For 20 years Gladys was employed at the Pella Overall Factory in Pella. Then in May of 1976 she began working at the Rolscreen Company in Pella. Gladys worked in the mutton bar department there while caring for her parents and being the homemaker for her brothers, Wayne and Robert. Gladys retired from the Pella Corporation in March of 1997.

In her retirement years Gladys enjoyed shopping and found much pleasure in collecting wedding pictures and obituaries.

On Sunday evening, July 9, 2006, Gladys succumbed to her illness while being cared for at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House in Pella. She attained the age of 72 years, 10 months and 8 days.

Those who will cherish her memory are her two younger brothers: Wayne Steenhoek and Robert Sam Steenhoek both of Pella and a sister-in-law, Jean (Marvin) Steenhoek of Des Moines.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents: her mother, Johanna Steenhoek who passed away in 1983 and her father, Hubert Steenhoek who passed away in 1990; her brother, Ronald Steenhoek, who died in infancy in 1944; her brother, Raymond Steenhoek, who died in 1993 and his wife, Zella M. Steenhoek, who died in 2000; and her oldest brother, Marvin Steenhoek, who died in 2000. Gladys was a faithful member of the First Reformed Church in Pella.

For those desiring, memorials may be designated for the First Reformed Church of Pella or Hospice of Pella, Iowa.
