Sylvia B. Smith was born on March 29, 1914, in France to Emile and Margaret Balliu Doubels. The family moved to Belgium where she was raised.

She married Lloyd Smith in 1945 in Belgium. They moved to the United States soon after that. They lived in Wapello and Davis Counties in Iowa for several years before moving to Knoxville around 1955. Sylvia worked as a laundry supervisor at the Veterans Hospital until her retirement in 1989.

She was a member of the Knoxville Church of the Nazarene, playing her mandolin with the church group, "The Gospel Echoes." One of her favorite pastimes was going shopping.

Sylvia died on April 17, 2006, at the age of 92 at Griffin Nursing Center where she had resided for the past two years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband in 1975 and one sister.

She is survived by one son, Joseph Doubels of Belgium; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Jim (Illeta) Smith of Blakesburg; several nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on April 21 at the Church of the Nazarene with Pastor Del Rittgers officiating.

Interment was in Wesley Chapel Cemetery in Davis County. Memorials may be made to the Church of the Nazarene.
