Shively, Betty Jean (Baker) 1923-2006

Betty Jean Baker Shively was born on April 18, 1923 in Marion County, Iowa. She was one of two daughters born to Gladys Feagins and Floyd Baker. Jean grew up in the Attica area; graduating from the Attica High School. Jean graduated from Central College in 1943.

Betty Jean Baker was united in marriage to Edward Shively on December 25, 1955. Together they raised three children.

Jean taught school in Bussey, Attica and Montezuma. She retired after teaching English for 20 years in Rantoul, Illinois. After her retirement in 1984 Jean and Ed returned to Attica.

Jean was an active member of the Retired Teachers Association, Daughters of the American Revolution and Central College Alumni Association. She was a member of the Attica United Methodist Church; holding various offices, a choir member and an active member of the United Methodist Women. Jean was a talented quilter; not only with the church ladies but also for her family and friends.

She enjoyed watching various sports; being an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, the Iowa Hawkeyes and Flying Dutchmen. Family was important to Jean. She enjoyed traveling with them as well as making visits to see the grandchildren. Jean had visited all 50 states, Africa, Asia, Europe and the South Pacific.

Mrs. Shively passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2006 at the Knoxville Area Community Hospital at the age of 82 years.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Ed and one sister, Bonnie Sherwood.

Those left to mourn her passing are one daughter, Judy Shively Smith and her husband, Bob of Genoa City, WI, two sons and their wives, James E. and Cindy Shively of Carefree, AZ and R. Jay and Anne Shively of Santa Cruz, CA and five grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life was held for Betty Jean Shively on Friday, February 24, 2006 at 10:30 am at Williams Funeral Home with Pastor Steven Bagby officiating. Interment was in the Indiana Chapel Cemetery in rural Marion County, Iowa. Music was provided by Janet Westberg, organist and Jennifer Lambirth, vocalist. Musical selections were "How Great Thou Art", "Blessed Assurance" and "I Can Only Imagine."

Casket bearers were Donald Goemaat, Harry Hart, Curtis Lambirth, Rich Lambirth, Bob Smith and Mike Sparks. Honorary casket bearer was Charlie Sims. A luncheon was held at the Attica United Methodist Church after the committal service. Memorials in memory of Jean Shively may be made the Indiana Chapel Cemetery Association or the Attica United Methodist Church.
