Poortinga, Elizabeth (Van Schevikhoven) 1919-2006

Elizabeth Van Schevikhoven Poortinga, daughter of John and Nellie Van Zee Van Schevikhoven, was born June 28, 1919, south of Pella.

Elizabeth passed away on Monday, April 10, 2006, at the Pella Regional Health Care Center Long Term Care at the age of eighty-six years.

On October 15, 1941, Elizabeth was united in marriage with Marion Poortinga. To this union six children were born: Duane, Nancy, Melvin, Evelyn "Evie", Phyllis, and Sharon. The family lived on various farms in the Pella area. Marion passed away April 11, 1955.

Elizabeth made profession of faith in 1941 at the First Reformed Church in Pella. She was currently a member of the Third Reformed Church in Pella. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, mending, baking, and loved being with her family.

She worked at the Pella Rolscreen Company for two years followed by doing janitor work for the Otley Reformed Church for three years, Third Reformed Church three years, and Hilltop Manor for ten years.

On August 18, 1964, Elizabeth married Gerrit Van Hulzen. Gerrit passed away November 23, 1971.

Elizabeth is survived by her children: Nancy and Clarence Spoelstra of Pella, Melvin and Karen Poortinga of Reasnor, Evie and Dale Baarda of Pella, Phyllis Ramer of Pella, and Sharon and Dave Steenhoek of Pella; daughter-in-law: Fran Poortinga of Pella; three step-children: Nelson Van Hulzen of Knoxville, Judy and Mike Savord of Arizona, and Elaine and Kurt Funk of Minnesota; fourteen grandchildren, ten step-grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and her sister: Martha Ward of Pella.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands; her son: Duane Poortinga; step-son: David Van Hulzen; and sister, Evalena, who died as an infant.

Elizabeth will fondly be remembered as a loving wife, mother, step-mother, grandmother, step-grandmother, and sister. Those she left will always cherish her memories.
