James Henry McDonald was born on Dec. 8, 1919, in Columbia to Clifford B. and Sadie (Wilson) McDonald.

James was raised in Knoxville. He worked as a coal miner before serving in the Army during World War II. James married Alma Leona Smith on Oct. 26, 1940, in Des Moines. He worked for the Water Department for the City of Knoxville for over 30 years.

In his youth, James enjoyed working on cars. He worked at the Knoxville Raceway as a security guard for many years. James enjoyed the Bluegrass Festivals, vegetable gardening, talking with his neighbors and his friends at the V.A., and going on fishing trips with his sons. He especially loved his family.

James died on March 26, 2006, at the Knoxville V.A. Hospital at the age of 86.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alma; brothers, Robert and Donald McDonald and sisters, Pearl McDonald, Dorothy Elsberry, Margaret Johnson and Pat Wilson.

Survivors include his children, Bill (Diane) McDonald of Knoxville, James (Linda) McDonald, Jr. of Cherokee, Jack (Diane) McDonald of Milo, Tony (Patricia) McDonald of Chapel Hill, N.C.; brother, Carl McDonald of Des Moines; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sister Dyke Fowler; brother, Carl McDonald and many other family members and friends.

Funeral services were held on March 29 with Elder Dick Young officiating.

Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery in Knoxville.

Memorials may be made to the Day Program at the Knoxville V.A.
