Peter F. Vander Beek, the son of Govert and Irene Hunt Vander Beek, was born Saturday, September 16, 1916, at Pella, Iowa. At a young age, he made his profession of faith. On February 5, 1941, he was united in marriage to Louise Walraven at her parent's home near Oskaloosa. To this union was born 4 children: James, Rodger, Paula, and her twin brother Peter Louis, who died when he was 4 days old. Pete and Louise farmed, first in Rose Hill area; then east of Lacey for 38 years, retiring in 1985 when they moved to their home north of Oskaloosa. For over 25 years, Pete served on the ASC committee, and was a board member from 1982 to 1985. He also sold seed corn for Middlekoops until he retired from farming. His retirement hobby for over 16 years was his involvement in the antique tractor pulls with his 1939 WC Allis-Chalmers. After retiring from farming, Pete worked with the Southern Iowa Fair for 11 years, and was currently employed at the Oskaloosa YMCA. He was a lifelong member of the Central Reformed Church of Oskaloosa, and had served as a deacon and elder.
On Wednesday morning, March 19, 1997, Pete died at the Mahaska County Hospital in Oskaloosa at the age of 80 years, 6 months, and 3 days.
Pete is survived by his wife, Louise of Oskaloosa; 2 sons and their wives: James and Barbara Vander Beek of New Sharon, and Rodger and Patti Vanderbeek of Niceville, Florida; a daughter and her husband: Paula and Bruce Stegeman of Platte City, Missouri; 8 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; a brother and his wife: Rev. A. Charles and Mildred Vander Beek of Grand Rapids, Michigan; and 2 sisters and their husbands: Esther and Marion Stam of Oskaloosa, and Mildred and Gary DeJong of Sun City, Arizona.
Besides his infant son, Pete was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister: Dorothy Rose Vander Beek; and a sister in law: Gretta Vander Beek.
Funeral services for Peter F. "Pete" Vander Beek was held in the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa, Iowa on Friday, March 21, 1997 at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Gil Visser presiding. Interment: Forest Cemetery, Garden of Reflection, Oskaloosa, Iowa. Arrangements by Bates Funeral Chapel. (From Pete's funeral card)
