Leonard A. Spurgeon, the son of Ross and Grace McClure Spurgeon, was born Sunday, August 2, 1914 at Bird City, Kansas. As an infant, he moved with his family to Iowa and settled at Udell, near Centerville. He grew up at Udell and graduated from the Udell High School. He then drove a livestock truck for the McCreary Sale Barn of Centerville. On April 17, 1942, he was married to F. Louise Whisler at Centerville. He then served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following his service to his country, he returned to the Centerville area, and later worked for Sieg-Ottumwa automotive for many years. They moved to Oskaloosa in 1948; and Leonard continued to work for Sieg, until he became a salesman for Moorman Feed. He worked for Moorman for 18 years, until retiring in 1977. He was a member of the Harry L. Anderson Post 34, American Legion in Oskaloosa.
On Wednesday evening, July 21, 1999, Leonard died at the Mahaska County Hospital in Oskaloosa, at the age of 84 years, 11 months, and 19 days.
He is survived by his wife, F. Louise Spurgeon of Oskaloosa; 2 daughters and their husbands: Marilyn J. and Robert Boyle of rural Dexter, Iowa, and Janice E. and Dr. Thomas A. Palmer of Salem, Iowa; 5 granddaughters: Jill (and husband, Christopher) Harris, Amy Cline, Jessica Barnard, Katy and Erica Palmer; his granddaughter in law: Paula Rasmussen; 2 step grandchildren: Terri Golightly and Kathi Boyle; 5 great grandchildren; 3 step great grandchildren; a step great great grandson; and a sister: Ruth Burger of Morrison, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson: Scott Cline; 2 brothers: LeRoy and Raymond Spurgeon; and 2 sisters: Marie Weber, and Louise Hutchison.
Funeral service for Leonard A. Spurgeon was held in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, Iowa on Saturday, July 24, 1999 at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Lanny Tuttle and Dr. Thomas A. Palmer preciding. Interment was held at Forest Cemetery with Graveside Military Rites. (from funeral card)
