Joseph Cook Hoskins, the son of Otis Wingot and Mary Hazel Cook Hoskins, was born on Friday, July 24, 1914 near Fremont, Iowa. He graduated from the Fremont High School with the class of 1933 and attended William Penn College for two years. On June 5, 1943, Joe was united in marriage to Helen Elaine McIntosh in Moline, Illinois. Farming was Joe's life long vocation and hobby, and he farmed northwest of Fremont his entire life, and moved into Oskaloosa in February of 1997. He was a life long member of the College Avenue Friends Church of Oskaloosa; and a member of the Fremont Lions Club, the Mahaska County Farm Bureau, and the Oskaloosa Kiwanis Club.
On Tuesday, October 24, 2000, Joe died at the Mahaska County Hospital in Oskaloosa, at the age of 86 years and 3 months.
He is survived by his wife, Helen of Oskaloosa; a daughter and her husband: Marilyn (& Gary) Thompson of Flushing, Michigan; a son and his wife: Joe II (& Shelly) Hoskins of Fremont; 5 grandchildren: Gena Hopkins, Chad Thompson, Sheffiney Thomas, Otis Hoskins, and Ashley Van Dyk; 6 great grandchildren; and 2 brothers and their wives: Ellis (& Elva) Hoskins of Springville, Iowa, and Moses (& Sybil) Hoskins of Fremont.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services for Joseph C. Hoskins were held at the College Avenue Friends Church in Oskaloosa, Iowa on Friday, October 27, 2000 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Kelly Kellum presiding. Interment was in Cedar Township Memorial Cemetery in Fremont, Iowa. This was a Bates Funeral Chapel service. (From Joseph's funeral card)
