Miss Harriett Atwood is very poorly at her home in Rose Hill, but her many friends hope for her recovery. (The Oskaloosa Herald, Jan. 1, 1903, p. 8)

Harriet E. Atwood was born in Johnson county, Indiana, November 6, 1833. Died at the home of John P. Asher, two and one-half miles northeast of Rose Hill, Iowa, April 24, 1903, aged 69 years, 5 months, and 18 days. Services were held at Wymore church by Rev. G.M. Vallandingham, on Sunday, April 26, with interment in Wymore cemetery. Miss Harriet E. Atwood came to Iowa with her parents in 1849. Her father, Rev. Alfred Atwood, taught the first school in Adams township, this county. He came into possession of a large tract of as fine farm land as there was in Mahaska county. He was a Baptist preacher by profession, entering upon the work of the ministry in early life in Indiana, and continued to do considerable of local preaching as long as he lived. He departed this life December 27, 1867. Miss Atwood was a lady of great worth in the community where she lived. Perhaps no one in Adams township was more admired for their acts of kindness than she was. She was a firm believer in the Baptist faith and never let an opportunity pass by unnoticed when she had a chance to help the needy and administer to the wants of those in her neighborhood who were needing help. Thus her whole life was spent and a large circle of friends will long remember her for her charitable and exemplary life (The Oskaloosa Herald, May 7, 1903, p. 5)
