Nellie Ione Timmerman, the daughter of Albert and Rella Dickson Mateer, was born on Monday, June 15, 1914, in Mahaska County. She graduated from the What Cheer High School with the class of 1933. In 1933 she was united in marriage to Ray Timmerman at Victor. Ione was a florist and wedding coordinator for 50 years. She was also a Federated Floral judge, and she judged flowers at many county fairs around the area. She was known for her Gladiolas that she raised on 10 acres for many years. She loved flowers, vegetable gardens, and music. She was a member of the Central United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa, American Legion Auxiliary, Eastern Star, Lady Eagles, Woman's Garden Club and Federated Garden Clubs of Iowa, of which she was the president in 1954 and 1955.

On Wednesday, April 21, 2004, Ione died at the Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa at the age of 89 years, 10 months and 6 days.

Ione is survived by her daughter: Arvetta "Artie" Clark of Oskaloosa; 3 grandchildren: George (& Chandra) Clark of Otley, and Keir (& Nathan) Clark of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Susan (& Steve) Schlichteg of St. Louis, Missouri; a sister: Erma Cover of Oskaloosa; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by a son: Arlen Richard Timmerman; a son in law: Sam Clark; 2 brothers: Marcellus Mateer and Elvyn Mateer.

Funeral services for Ione Timmerman will be held Saturday, April 24, 2004 at 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Robert Dean and Reverend Dr. Terry Kleven officiating. Burial will be in the Wymore Cemetery east of Oskaloosa. Visitation will begin Friday morning after 9 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel Friday evening from 6:30 – 8 to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Shriner's Crippled Childrens Hospitals or Mahaska Hospice. (from Ione's funeral card).
