John Newendorp (1941 - 2003)

John W. Newendorp, 62, of Leighton, died Friday, December 5, 2003, at the Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. He was born January 15, 1941, at Oskaloosa, the son of Walter and Marie Groenendyk Newendorp. Two months later was baptized at Ebenezer REfordmed Church in Leighton. He made his confession of faith at Ebenezer Reformed on February 5, 1957. He graduated from the Pella High School with the class of 1959, and then attended Northeast Missouri State in Kirksville. He served in the air guard of the Iowa National Guard for several years. On July 12, 1963, he was united in marriage to Karen Vander Leest at Pella. He was a truck driver for many years, with Brummel Brothers, then Jerry DeVries, and later Pella Co-op. In 1987, he purchased the Oskaloosa Gas and Oil Company on South Market Street in Oskaloosa, which he operated until his death. He was a lifetime member of Ebenezer Reformed Church of Leighton; a member of the Mahaska County Sheriff's Posse, and served as long time secretary. He was former city councilman and mayor of Leighton. For several years, he was a 4 H Leader, and involved with the Southern Iowa Fair. John was a big race fan, and supplied the racing fuel at Southern Iowa Speedway, Eldon Speedway, Bloomfield Speedway, and the Eddyville Raceway. He enjoyed his work at the gas station and working with the area racers, and spending time with his family.

John is survived by his wife, Karen of Leighton; a son and his wife, Kevin and Jeanette Newendorp of Leighton; a daughter: Kimberly Newendorp of Oskaloosa; 4 grandchildren: Timathy, Daniel, Alissa, and Mackenzie Newendorp. Also a brother and his wife: Wilbur and Gladys Newendorp of Pella; and 2 sisters and their husbands: Louise and John Van Woerkom of Pella, and Dorothy and Dwight Wanders of New Sharon. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, and many friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents; a sister: Beulah Arkema; and a brother in law: Dormand Arkema who both died in September of 2003.

Funeral services for John Newendorp will be held Monday, December 8, 2003, at 1:30 p.m. in the Ebenezer Reformed Church in Leighton with the Reverend Dean Ulmer officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at Leighton. There will be a family prayer service on Monday at 1:15 p.m. in the small chapel area of the church. Visitation will begin at the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa on Sunday after 10 a.m., and the family will be at the funeral chapel on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. A memorial has been established in his name.
