Irene Van Mersbergen, 82, of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, Oct. 27, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Her funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa, the Rev. Robert Timmer officiating. Burial: Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa. A family prayer service will be held 10:15 a.m. Tuesday in the church's basement fellowship hall. Visiting hours at Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa are open today, with family present 7-8:30 p.m. Memorials: Christian Opportunity Center or America Diabetes Association.
Irene Van Mersbergen was born June 22, 1919, near New Sharon in Mahaska County to Gerrit and Maggie Klein Van Ommen. On Jan. 5, 1938, she married Lewis Van Mersbergen at the home of her parents east of Lacey. She worked as a clerk in various stores in Oskaloosa, and lastly in the kitchen of Mahaska County Hospital for many years, retiring in 1984. She was a member of First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa, and had taught Sunday school and was a member of the church's Ladies' Bible Hour. She also had helped Good News Chapel in Oskaloosa with its Vacation Bible School in the summer.
She is survived by her husband, Lewis, of Oskaloosa; two sons and daughters-in-law: James and Maxine Van Mersbergen and Larry and Shirley Van Mersbergen, all of Oskaloosa; nine grandchildren: Ray, Donald, Wayne and Brad Van Mersbergen, Sheryl Fenton, Rhonda Taylor, Dorothy Ryan, Leslie Bruinekool and Brian Thomason; six great-grandchildren; four sisters and a brother-in-law: Dora Lamers and Lillian Van Arkel, both of Oskaloosa, Nellie Ver Beek of Rose Hill and Henrietta and Pete Swank of Newton; and a sister-in-law, Ethel Van Ommen of Eddyville.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her twin sister Elizabeth Van Ommen, and two other sisters, Pearl Kitzman and Maggie Van Roekel; and seven brothers: Ben, Dick, Henry, John, Walter, Garry, and Tunis Van Ommen. (Oskaloosa Herald, n.d.)
