Avis Ver Steegh, 93, of Oskaloosa and formerly of the New Sharon area, died Thursday, March 11, at Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. Her funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, March 15, at Lacey United Methodist Church, Pastor Don Ridnouer officiating. Burial: Friends Cemetery in New Sharon. Visiting hours begin noon Sunday at Harden Funeral Home in New Sharon, with family present 3-6 p.m. Sunday. Memorials: Lacey United Methodist Church.
Wilma Avis Phillips Ver Steegh was born Jan. 24, 1911, in Oskaloosa to John and June Lawrance Phillips. She graduated from New Sharon High School in 1928, and attended the Cedar Falls Teachers' College and later graduated from William Penn College. On Aug. 12, 1931, she married Deverne Ver Steegh in Unionville, Mo. She taught at the Star School east of New Sharon and the Granville School near Taintor. She was also third-grade teacher at the Lacey School for 10 years, and at North Mahaska for 10 years, retiring in 1974. She was a member of the Lacey United Methodist Church and was involved with the Women's Society. She was a member of Oskaloosa Women's Club, Mahaska Hospice Auxiliary, Mahaska Hospital Auxiliary where she volunteered at the snack bar, and the King's Daughters Faith Circle. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye basketball fan.
She is survived by her son and wife, Jerry and Phylis Ver Steegh, of Bloomington, Ill.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; two brothers John and wife Myrna Phillips fo Austin, Minn., and Lawrence Phillips of Berkeley, Calif.; and three sisters: Betty Cassill of Ottumwa, Ruth Hanson of Annapolis, Md., and Audree Phillips of Gardnerville, Nev.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1986; an infant daughter, June Ann Ver Steegh; a son, Robert Ver Steegh; a grandson, David Ver Steegh; two brothers: Vance and Lowell Phillips; and three sisters: Lois Fleener, Mildred Reiner and Phyllis Williams.
