Alma Florence Slager Whitaker (1908-2001)

Alma Florence Slager Whitaker, age 92, passed away Wed., Sept. 26, 2001 at Georgian Court Nursing Home in Oskaloosa. Alma Whitaker was born to George C. & Emma Meyer Slager in Poweshiek County on Sept. 27, 1908. She attended school in Victor, Iowa. After graduation from Victor High School, she attended beauty school; she then became a beautician and began working at Alsop's Beauty Salon in Oskaloosa. She married Harold R. Whitaker on Nov. 27, 1931 in Missouri. She and her husband started Whitaker Motors in Oskaloosa, it was a Studabaker dealership and also sold Minneapolis Moline farm machinery; she continued to be a part of this business until retiring in 1975. Alma belonged to the Central United Methodist Church; she was an assistant leader with the Brownies, while her daughter was involved as a Brownie and served on the Girl Scout Council for more than 50 years. She was a member of the Oskaloosa Woman's Club and Business & Professional Woman; Alma was active in the Oskaloosa community for over 70 years and did her best in every area to which she was called. She enjoyed crocheting, and flower and vegetable gardening. Alma's memory is honored by her daughter, Kay Alford and her husband, Al Alford of Issaquah, WA; by her two grandsons and their wives, Gregory T. & Laura Horn of Light House Point, FL and Douglas C. & Ahn Lee Horn of North Bend, WA. She was blessed with three great grandchildre: Devon, Carman & Nathan. Preceding her in death is her husband, Harold on Sept. 20, 1974 and a grandson, Stacy N. Horn on May 6, 1992. Funeral Services were held at the Central United Methodist Church on Monday Afternoon, October 1, 2001 at one thirty in the afternoon with Pastor Bob Morris officiating. Interment was held in Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa, Iowa. Arrangements entrusted to the Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel.
