William Curtis Hite (1863-1939)

William Curtis Hite, youngest son of Henry and Mary Jane Hite, was born in Woodhull, Illinois, August 22, 1863 and passed away at his home at 6:15 o’clock, February 11, 1939 at the age of 75 years, five months and 19 days. In the spring of 1868 he came with his parents to Iowa and settled on a farm near New Virginia in Warren county. At the age of fifteen he again moved with his parents to a farm near Gilman in Jasper county. On October 3, 1883 he was united in marriage to Guielma Carr of New Sharon. To this union were born five children: Tom of New Sharon, Ralph deceased at the age of three years, Floyd and Mrs. Josie Hess of New Sharon, and Lee of Rose Hill. In the spring of 1893 he moved with his family to a farm near New Sharon, where he has since resided. His wife having passed away he was again united in marriage to Emma McKissick also of New Sharon on February 24, 1903. To this union were born five children: Velmah who passed away March 21, 1937, Orla and Robert of New Sharon, and Wilma and Lester at home. He was the youngest of seven children, five boys and two girls all of whom preceded him in death. Besides the immediate family he leaves fifteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren besides a host of other relatives and friends. He was a kind loving husband and father, a true neighbor ever ready to help in times of need. He was in poor health for some time, but was confined to his bed most of the time since November 24, 1938. On February 3, he was taken worse and was a constant sufferer until the time of his death. At one time he was a member of the Christian church at Gilman and was a silent confessor of his faith. He told his family he was ready and willing to go. Funeral service of the deceased were held at the M.E. church at New Sharon at 2 p.m. Monday, February 13, 1939. With the Reverend G.E. Purdy of Des Moines in charge assisted by Rev. Buchanan of New Sharon. With his six sons acting as pall bearers he was placed in the family lot in the Masonic cemetery at New Sharon. Music was furnished by Mrs. Marie Downey with Miss Mae McVay at the piano. The New Sharon Star, February 16, 1939.

During his illness he appreciated everything that was done for him and we sincerely want to thank each and everyone who have expressed their sympathy in floral offerings and in other ways since and before his passing.

Wm. HIte, 75, Passess Away Here Saturday
Wm. Hite, 75, a resident of this community for 46 years, passed away at his farm home near here Saturday.
Funeral services were at the Methodist church here Monday afternoon. The Rev. Mr. Purdy, Des Moines pastor, was in charge. Burial was made in the Masonic cemetery.
Six sons and three daughters survive.
