ROSE HILL - Dorothy Irene De Groot, 66, of Rose Hill, died Friday, Sept. 21, at Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. Her funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa, the Rev. Robert Timmer officiating. A family prayer service will be held in the church basement at 1:15 p.m. Burial: Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa. Visiting hours are open at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, with family present 6-8 p.m. today.
Dorothy Irene was born June 15, 1935, in Ottumwa to Otto and Caroline Van Hulzen Van Roekel. She attended Old Rose Hill Grade School and Rose Hill High School. She moved to the Oskaloosa area in 1952 and graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1953. She then worked at Mercy Hospital in Oskaloosa until marring John H. De Groot on Feb. 17, 1955, in Oskaloosa. They lived west of New Sharon for a year before moving to their current home in rural Rose Hill. She helped on the family dairy farm. She enjoyed sewing, cooking and gardening and loved the outdoors, especially the sunrise. She was a past 4-H participant. She was a member of First Christian Reformed Church, and a member of the church's Queen Esther's Society. She also taught Sunday school, and was active with the rural Wymore Church Bible School program.
She is survived by her husband, John, of Rose Hill; three sons and two daughters-in-law: Richard and Belinda of Rose Hill, Roger and Cleo of Oskaloosa and Randall of Rose Hill; a daughter and son-in-law: Ruth and Melvin Gott of Montezuma; nine grandchildren; her stepmother, Artie Van Roekel of Oskaloosa, a brother and sister-in-law: Junior and Cecelia Van Roekel of Oskaloosa; a half-brother Wayne Van Roekel of Oskaloosa; two stepsisters and spouses: Joleen and Bob Peterson of Lincoln, Neb., and Walt Alexander of Marietta, Ga.
She was precede in death by her parents and a brother John A. Van Roekel.
