HENLEY, POLK, KENT, WOODRUFF, BACKER

David Edward HENLEY, 69, assistant Oskaloosa police chief who died Monday moring, January 1, 1940, from complications of diabetes and carbuncle, will be buried in Forest cemetery Wednesday following funeral services at the St. James Episcopal church at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. David Pierce-Jones, rector, in charge. Members of the Oskaloosa police force will serve as pall bearers.
Mr. HENLEY, who has been ill for three weeks, was born March 27, 1871, in Harrison township, the son of William Henry and Sarah POLK HENLEY. He attended the local public schools and married Hannah Maude KENT at Belle Plaine on February 16, 1895. Mr. HENLEY was the last of his family including seven brothers and sisters and is survived by his widow and six children, including Mrs. T.E. WOODRUFF of Webster Groves, Mo., Edward Lyle of Oskaloosa, Charles Gordon of Rockford, Ill., Leslie Frank of Oskaloosa, Mrs. J.C. BACKER of Webster Groves, Mo., and Alice Irene of Oskaloosa. One son, John, died in 1904.
Mr. HENLEY has been prominent as a peace officer most of his adult life, having served as a police officer for approximately 35 years in Oskaloosa and was Mahaska county sheriff from 1915 to 1923. He also served as constable and was a member of the Mahaska county draft board during the world war. He has served as assistant police chief for several years.
