BOY KILLED BY FALL

Glen Gerard of Union Mills Meets an Untimely Death

Glen Gerard, ten yar (sic) old son of Mr. and Mrs. John Gerard, who live three miles northeast of Union Mills, was killed by falling from a tree. The boy had gone to Harry Litzenburg’s to play with the Litzenburg children children and together they went to the timber and the victim of the unfortunate accident climbed a tree after a hawk’s nest when in some manner he fell a distance of thirty five feet into a slough, lighting on some rocks. He received injuries from which he died soon after the fall. One lower limb was broken the femur bone protruding through the flesh. One arm was also broken and internal injuries sustained which caused almost instant death.

His little playmates were badly frightened but had presence of mind enough to give the alarm. Dr. J.G. Ryan was called from New Sharon and also a doctor from Montezuma. The neighbors removed the body to the Litzenburg home but the boy never regained consciousness after the fall and died before the physicians could reach him.

The father, who operates a threshing machine, was away at work and the mother happened to be in Montezuma at the time of the accident.

Glen was a fine lad of good habits and a promising future and his untimely and tragic death came as a terrible shock to his parents who have the sympathy of the people of the entire community.

Funeral services were held at the Union Mills Christian church Wednesday afternoon and interment made in Union Mills Cemetery.
