Obituary
Peter J. Bentley
Peter J. Bentley was born in the state of Indiana Jan. 18, 1849, and died at his home in Barnes City, Iowa, May 4, 1918 aged 69 years, 3 months and 26 days.
When about 5 years of age, he removed with his parents to Marshall county, Iowa, and with the exception of nine years spent in Kansas, he lived in this state continuously since that age.
In 1873, he was married to Charlotte Moore, near New Sharon. To this union were born eight children, five of whom survive him; Mrs. Minnie Gregory of Oskaloosa, Mrs. Stella Gregory of Barnes City. Mrs. Katherin Farmer of Searsboro, Charles of Laverne, Okla., and Earl of Spirit Lake, Iowa. These together with the wife , two brothers, J. M. Bentley of Douglas, N. D. and G. E. Bentley of Burr Oak, Kan., one sister, Mrs. Clara Cummings of Bonnie Glenn, Canada, and fourteen grandchildren mourn the loss of a loving husband, father and brother.
When about twenty years of age he was converted and united with the M. E. church. Later he transferred to the Free Methodist church. In this church he was ordained to the ministry and for a number of years he filled the following appointments: Altamon and Brownson, Kans. Sigourney and Rose Hill in Iowa, the Rose Hill charge including What Cheer and Barnes City.
About five years ago, owing to an accident, he was attacked by blood poisoning, which caused the loss of his eyesight and compelled him to retire from active work. Since his retirement he lived at Indianapolis until March 1 of this year, when he moved to Barnes City.
So when life's sweet journey ends.
Soul and body part like friends,
No quarrels, no murmurs, no delay;
A kiss, a sigh, and so away.
The funeral was held from the M. E. church on Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. C. Cray Jones, assisted by Rev. W. E. Burdine of Montezuma. Burial was made in the Barnes City cemetery.
