Richard Wilson MOORE, oldest son of John F. and Mary MOORE, was born in Warren County, IN, August 27, 1842 and died at his home in Cedar, IA [Mahaska Co.] April 28, 1930 at the age of 87 years, 8 months and 1 day. He moved with his parents to Mahaska County [IA] in 1843. Early in the Civil War he enlisted and served through that period as a member of Company B 36 Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He was untied in marriage with Mary E. COLE on October 15, 1866, and to them were born five children. John and Charley died in infancy and a daughter, Hila STEEL in 1896. The surviving children are Mrs. Belle VOTAW, of Apopka, FL and Frank F. of Cedar. His wife, Mary, preceded him in death 12 years ago. He is survived also by one sister, Mrs. Ida GWIN of Cedar, three brothers, T.K. MOORE of Marshalltown, [IA], H.G. MOORE and J.L. MOORE of Cedar, five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. The year following his marriage he and his wife moved to the farm at Cedar where he resided continuously for 63 years. He was a faithful member of the M.E. church and with his deceased wife and a number of other early settlers of the community through their faith and diligent efforts brought the Cedar church into being. Mr. Moore was always deeply interested in new developments of the country and all civic affairs. He served as a member of the board of supervisors of Mahaska County for a number of terms and three different times has served in the capacity of postmaster at Cedar. During Mr. Moore’s residence near Cedar a railroad has been built through his farm as well as the paved primary road No. 63. Funeral services were held at Cedar M.E. church with Rev. A. A. Heath, of Ottumwa, a nephew of Mr. Moore, assisted by Rev. C. W. Cochran, Cedar pastor, in charge. Mrs. Rhoda Woodruff represented the Ladies of the G.A.R. in the burial ceremony and the casket was draped in the flag from the church to the grave in Kirkville cemetery [Wapello Co., IA].
