The New Sharon Star, February 22, 1940. Rites for Mrs. Fannie BATES Held Feb. 17. Funeral services for Mrs. Fannie BATES were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, February 17, 1940, at the Osborne-Taylor funeral parlors with the Rev. E.M. GREGSON of Eldon bringing the message. Members of Clio Rebekah Lodge No. 182 attended in a body and gave their funeral service at the close of the sermon. Burial was made in the North cemetery. Mrs. Fannie FORTNEY BATES, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.M. FORTNEY, was born in Illinois, September 28, 1866, and died at Mahaska hospital, Wednesday evening, February 14, 1940, aged 73 years. When three months of age she came with her parents to New Sharon where she has since made her home. She was married to Nelson D. BATES in 1893 and for many years Mr. and Mrs. BATES were in the restaurant business until failing health made it necessary for them to sell their business. Mrs. BATES had been in poor health for a number of years but her last illness was only three weeks. She was a charter member of Clio Rebekah Lodge but had been unable to attend for several years. She is survived by one son, two sisters, Mrs. Josie PELOE of Orlando, Florida and Mrs. Henry MOFFETT of Lacey; two brothers, James of Eldora and John of Oskaloosa, one niece, Mrs. Walter GRAHAM of Orlando, Florida, who made her home with Mr. and Mrs. BATES during her school days, also several other nieces and nephews and a large circle of friends.
