Samuel G. Ruby, who for many years was prominent in the affairs of this county, died at his home in Los Angeles on last Saturday, December 20th, at the ripe old age of 85 years. About a year ago, he suffered from an injury received in stepping from a street car, which it is believed contributed to a breakdown. His extreme illness began only a week before his death.

To sketch the life of S. G. Ruby is to review the early history of Winterset, where he was prominent in the business, social and political life of the community.

The splendid brick residence, now used as a hospital, was for many years the Ruby home. Here were centered many of the social events of Winterset's young people thirty and forty years ago. It was a nappy home, where hospitality was generous and genuine.

Mr. Ruby was for many years an active practitioner in law in partnership with Eli Wilkin, who came to Winterset following the civil war. In 1888 he was appointed consul to Belfast by President Harrison. After serving for ... years in that position, he returned to Winterset, and, about twenty years ago moved to Los Angeles and retired from active life. Mrs. Ruby, one daughter, Blanche, and one son, Claude, reside in Los Angeles.
