WILLIAM HARRISON BARBARY

William Harrison Barbary was born in Washington county, Virginia, March 18, 1847. At the age of 16 he enlisted in Co. F. 37th Virginia infantry, in which he served under General Lee until the close of the war at Appomattox thus attesting loyalty to his native state. Although having served in the army of the southern confederacy, he had many times expressed his satisfaction in the preservation of the Union.

He came to Iowa in 1867 and was married Dec. 17, 1867 to Miss Sarah M. McKee, also of Virginia. There both Mr. Barbary and his wife attended school together previous to their marriage. Their union has been a very beautiful and happy one.

At the age of 30, he was converted and joined the church, and has lived a useful Christian life ever since.

Since coming to Iowa he has lived in East Peru and vicinity, working at his trade as blacksmith for 17 years, until 1888 when he engaged himself in the hardware business, which he built up into a substantial enterprise and won the respect of all as a business man.

For fifteen years he taught a Bible class in the M E. Sunday school. His splendid counsel and Christian like interpretation of the scriptures will live deep in the hearts of many who heard him either in the class or elsewhere. He was a staunch member of the official board and will be missed in their conferences.

Of late he had realized the end might be near and out of the goodness of a devoted husband's heart he had admonished his loving wife not to be sorrowful, but to be cheerful. Such was his departure from his world to the next, no fear and no trembling, for all was well with his soul. He fell peacefully asleep and was taken Home to be with his Heavenly Father Dec. 6, 1916.

He leaves to mourn his departure a loving and devoted wife, a niece, Sarah Cadwallader of Long Beach, Calif.; Martin D. Wolfe, a nephew, of Valley Junction; Z. T. McKee of Girard, Kans.; Lena Gation of Spokane, Wash.; J. R. McKee and family, A. W. Hiatt and family, Walter Shearer and family and Clyde Shearer of East Peru; and Claude Shearer, with the guards on the Mexican border, besides a host of friends.

The Methodist Episcopal church of East Peru was filled to overflowing, showing with what high esteem he has held in the hearts of the people of this community. The choir sang beautifully several of the songs that Mr. Barbary had always loved. Orville Manker , the pastor, delivered a short but fitting tribute and a word of comfort to the sorrowing, using as his text John 14:27. The body was laid to rest in the Peru cemetery.

THE PASSING WM. BARBARY

Wednesday night at about 12 o’clock marked the time when Mr. Barbary closed his eyes to the scenes of earth and passed on to a richer and more glorious future. Mr. Barbary had made this his home since the close of the war. He not only made and built up a home here, but made and accumulated property, and his word was as good as a bond. Always honest in his dealings with his fellow man and came to the rescue of the needy he peacefully passed out of this life as his beloved companion and near relatives gathered at his bedside. An appropriate obituary of Mr. Barbary will appear next week.
