SARAH GIFFORD

Sarah Charity Stone was born at Leroy, Pa., Nov. 14, 1873 and moved with her parents to Warren county, Iowa, at the age of three years. She was married to John R. Littler, Sept. 9, 1891 at Sandyville, Iowa. To this union was born one daughter, Elsie Lizzie Schroder, who lives at Beech, Iowa. Her husband died August 14, 1894.

She was married on Oct. 21, 1896 at Winterset, Iowa, to Isaac John Gifford. To this union was born six children, all of whom survive her. They are: Dorothea May, James Franklin, Sylvia Jane, Isaac Harold, Cleo Almedia and Susie Blanche.

Mrs. Gifford died at the Methodist hospital in Des Moines, Dec. 6, 1916, at the age of 43 years and 22 days. She leaves to mourn her death, a husband, seven children, four step-children, an aged father, three brothers and three sisters and a host of other relatives and friends. All close relatives being present but one sister, who is sick at home and one step-child.

She united with the Methodist church at the age of 14, of which she was a devoted worker, and later joined the Christian church, of which she was a member at the time of her death. Her mother preceded her to the better world 12 years ago. She being the first of seven children to be called to her reward, the blow comes very hard to the husband, children, father, sisters and brothers. Too much cannot be said of her kind and loving disposition, as a devoted wife, and a very kind and most loving mother.

Orville Manker, pastor of the Methodist church, delivered the funeral sermon, using for his text John 114:1. The services were conducted in the Christian church; the church being filled to overflowing. Her body was laid to rest in the Peru cemetery.

MRS. I GIFFORD DIES IN DES MOINES.

News came Wednesday of the death of Mrs. Gifford, which cast a gloom over the entire community, she had been in poor health and had suffered so much and so long that at last she had to give up that brave and determined fight for life and health it seemed too bad that she had to give up the battle at this time. We become acquainted with the family soon after coming to Peru and have been intimate friends ever since. She was a good woman, a large hearted woman, and she passes from earth to Heaven leaving many friends behind to mourn her departure. An obituary will appear in our next issue. One daughter from Sandyville, a brother and sister from Des Moines, and a sister from Charles City were present at the funeral.
