LOIS E. ESTELL, Winterset

Lois Evelyn Estell, 86, died Friday, June 26, 2009 at Taylor House in Des Moines, Iowa.

Celebration of Life Services will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 29, at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset. Burial will be prior to services at 9 a.m. in the Winterset Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be made to the First United Methodist Church in Winterset and/or the American Stroke Association.

Lois was born March 28, 1923 in Madison County, Iowa, to John and Inus (Pace) Potter. The second of three daughters, Lois grew up on a farm where she learned and loved to cook. She married E. Wayne Estell on August 9, 1944 and established their lifelong home in Winterset. Lois worked at the Selective Services Office during World War II and began working at Ritter Insurance in 1958 where she was office manager and a licensed agent until her retirement in 1990.

Lois was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Winterset and was active in the Susanna Circle-a service-oriented circle involved in many service missions within her local community. She was able to participate in the community amongst many of her close friends. Lois loved to give back to her community, which is obvious through her volunteer work. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary-an organization committed to helping veterans, families, and communities-and held several offices there over the years. Lois and her husband, Wayne, were volunteers at Iowa Methodist Medical Center after retirement. They were also members of Lions Club International, a volunteer organization formed to serve communities, meet humanitarian needs, and promote peace and international understanding. She was always supportive of her husband's community involvement and projects. Lois loved spending time with her family, playing cards, crocheting, and reading.

Lois is survived by her two daughters, Kaye Estell of Roanoke, Texas and Peg (Kelly) Green of Urbandale; four grandchildren, Sean (Sonja) Estell, Heather (Mark) Taylor, Allison (James) Waite, and Courtney (Keith) Kimsey; six great-grandchildren, Summer, Rylie, Avery, Reid, Levi, and Lukas; one sister, Marcia (Earl) Augspurger of Sun City West, Arizona; and a cousin, Shirley Wildin of Winterset.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Wayne, and sister Betty Welch.
