Earlham Echo - Thursday, January 30, 1947

Jessie, oldest child of James and Mary Nelson was born in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, June 8, 1884. She moved with her family to Fort Madison when about 3 years of age, at which place they resided until moving to Earlham in 1900.

She finished her schooling in the Earlham Academy. She worked in Des Moines for many years, returning to Earlham to care for her father and mother in their declining years.

She was married to Robert Mac Manus in February 1932, who departed this life in the spring of 1944.

Jessie was of a kind and loving disposition. Loyal to her friends and always ready to help a sick neighbor, or one who needed help. She was taken to the University hospital at Iowa City on July 8 and operated on for tumor July 13. She remained in the hospital for two months, when she was able to be moved to a nursing home in West Des Moines. She remained there until November when she was taken to a nursing home in Winterset where she passed away on January 23, 1947. Through all of her sickness she was most cheerful. Everyone who waited on her really enjoyed doing for her for she was so appreciative for all that was done for her. It was her cherished dream to some day visit her loved ones in the west.

She leaves to mourn her passing, one son, Maurice, of DeLake, Oregon, three grandchildren, Peter, Linda, and Roger. One brother, Harry Nelson of Los Angeles, California. One sister Mrs. Maud Gray of St. Petersburg, Florida, an aunt Mrs. Mary Davis of Des Moines, an uncle, Charles Nelson, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends who will miss her. She was a member of the Presbyterian church of Earlham.

Services were conducted from the Presbyterian church at 2:30 Sunday afternoon, by Rev. S. R. Overholser and burial was made in the Earlham cemetery.
