Bernice Brant, Urbandale

Bernice Cleo Brant, 90, a former Truro resident, died Oct. 2, 2003 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.

Funeral services were held Monday Oct. 6, at the Congregational Christian United Church of Christ in Truro with Pastor Carl Van Farowe officiating. Burial was at Ebenezer Cemetery, Walnut Township, Madison County.

Bernice Brant was born Aug. 29, 1913 in Osceola to Frank Leonard and Ollie (Audlehelm) Carpenter. She was a graduate of Osceola High School and Osceola Junior College. On April 11, 1936, she was united in marriage to William Howard Brant in Osceola. They resided in the Truro area. Following her husband's death in 1960, Bernice worked at the restaurant in Truro and also was a part-time postal clerk, retiring in 1980, after 18 years of service. She was a member of the Congregational Christian United Church of Christ in Truro and the Jolly Fu Club. She also had been active as a 4-H leader and church youth leader. For the past six years, she had resided at the Urbandale Care Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, John and Walter Carpenter; and a grandson, Bill Brant.

She is survived by a son, Dean Brant of Creston; two daughters, Dixie Murphy of Urbandale and Donna Martin of Truro; seven grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Congregational Christian United Church of Christ or Mercy Hospice.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Kale Funeral Home in Truro.

Bernice C. Brant, daughter of Frank Carpenter and Ollie Audlehelm Carpenter was born August 29, 1913 in Osceola, Iowa. She passed from this life on October 2, 2003 at the Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa at age of 90 years.

Bernice spent her childhood in Osceola. She graduated from Osceola High School and Osceola Junior College. She was united in marriage to William Howard Brant on April 11, 1936 in Osceola, Iowa and three children blessed this union, Dean, Dixie and Donna.

Bernice was a housewife and homemaker. Her husband William preceded her in death in 1960 at which time Bernice began working at the restaurant in Truro and was a part time postal clerk. The postal clerk job became full time and she retired in 1980 after working over 18 years at the post office.

Bernice and Willima enjoyed square dancing. Bernice was a very active 4 H leader and youth leader at her church. She was a member of the Congregational Christian United Church of Christ in Truro and a member of the Jolly Fu Club. She loved sewing and reading Westerns, especially Zane Gray novels. She enjoyed going to the Truro meal site with friends and taking part in all the activities. Her grandchildren were all a very special part of her life.

Bernice was preceded in death by her husband William, 2 brothers, John and Walter Carpenter and grandson, Bill Brant.

She leaves to cherish her memory her son, Dean Brant and wife Twila of Creston; daughter Dixie Murphy and husband Ed of Urbandale; daughter, Donna Martin and husband Herschel of Truro, Iowa; 7 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Betty Carpenter of Osceola, Iowa as well as other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Monday, October 6, 2003 at the Congregational Christian United Church of Christ in Truro, Iowa with burial in the Ebenezer Cemetery in Madison County. Visitation will be held on Sunday at the Kale Funeral Home in Truro after 10 a.m. with the family present to greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday. Memorials may be directed to her church or Mercy Hospice.
