VIRGIL J. WIGGINS, Winterset

Virgil John Wiggins, 83, died July 7, 2001, of heart failure at Winterset Care Center North.

Funeral services were held today at 10:30 a.m. at Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset with the Rev. Robert Barrick officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery with military rites performed by American Legion Post 184 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8142, both of Winterset.

Virgin Wiggins was born April 28, 1918, to John H. and Emma A. (Woolery) Wiggins of DeSoto. A 1937 graduate of DeSoto High School, he married Opal M. Shetterly on Sept. 25, 1938, in Des Moines.

A lifelong Madison County resident, he and his wife moved to Winterset in 1944. Virgil retired in 1983 as a construction superintendent. One of his construction projects was the building of the south side of Madison County Memorial Hospital in Winterset. A veteran of the United States Air Force, serving in World War II, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church, First United Methodist Men's Group, American Legion Post 184 and the Genealogical Society, all of Winterset, and a former member of the Winterset Lions Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a son-in-law.

He is survived by his wife, Opal, of Winterset, a daughter, Sandy Halverson of Fresno, Calif.; three sons, Ron Wiggins of Appleton, Wis., and Steven Wiggins (wife Jane) and Kevan Wiggins (wife Tammy), both of Winterset; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren
