Doris Kathleen Poindexter, 77, died of heart failure Nov. 15, 2000 at Antelope Valley Health Care Center in Lancaster, Calif., where she had resided since June 2000.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 16 at Urbandale United Church of Christ with Pastor Sue Gallagher officiating. Burial of the cremains will be at Winterset Cemetery.

Doris Poindexter was born Aug. 11, 1923, in Madison County. A graduate of Winterset High School and Iowa State University, she had been a vocational educator for over 30 years, retiring in 1989. Doris was an active member and officer in various professional organizations. She also was a member of the Urbandale Lioness Club, Church Women United, Urbandale Historical Society, Friends of the Des Moines Botanical Center, Friends of the Prairie Learning Center and a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star.

She is survived by a daughter, Vicki White (husband Geoff) of Columbia, Calif; a son, James (Nick) Poindexter (wife Cathie) of Lancaster, Calif.; a sister, Barbara Demory of West Des Moines; a brother, Phillip Sawyer of Denver, Colo.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.
