Death of Stephen C. Pope

Stephen Charles Pope, a resident for many years of Webster township, died Friday, April 19th, at the age of 87 years. Mr. Pope, who was a son of Stephen and Catherine Pope, was born in Oneida county, New York, January 6, 1843. When he was five years of age, the family moved to Illinois, and six years later they came to Madison county, where the rest of his boyhood and young manhood was spent on a farm in Webster township.

Mr. Pope was married to Nancy Ann Moore, April 23, 1867. They had three children, two daughters, Mrs. Andrew Sawyer and Mrs. Etta Hamblin, of Madison county, and one son, John Pope, of Arcadia, Kansas. Mr. and Mrs. Pope made their home in Webster township all the years of their married life. It was at their home that Mrs. Pope passed away in 1912.

The deceased united with the Methodist church when he was a young man. Later, he joined the Church of Christ, where he was a member for 25 years.

He leaves besides his children, nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren, one brother, Lee Pope of (unreadable), Wisconsin and one sister, Ruth Sweet of Webster township. The Rev. F. Clare McCallon conducted the funeral services at the Webster church Sunday, April 21st, at 2:30 o'clock, and burial was made in the Roberts cemetery.
