91-Year-Old Woman Came West in Covered Wagon
Mrs. Gillette Harpole died at Winterset last Thursday at the age of 91 years. She had lived most of her life in Madison county.
Mrs. Harpole was a native of Washington county, Pennsylvania, where she was born March 25, 1867. She was the former Eldora Crow, daughter of Jacob and Isabelle Crow. When she was 11 years of age the family moved to Butler county, Kansas, making the trip by covered wagon. Two years later they came to Madison county, settling on a farm in Webster township.
In 1912 she was married to Gillette Harpole and lived several years near Dexter, where she united with the Presbyterian church. Later they moved near Patterson, where they lived until Mr. Harpole's death in 1950.
Mrs. Harpole then moved to Winterset and transferred her church membership to the local Methodist church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, four brothers and a sister. She is survived by one brother, Roy Crow of Afton, and five step-children.
Funeral services were held Sunday, June 29, from Anderson's Home for Funerals, conducted by the Rev. W. W. Steinmetz. Burial was made in Roberts cemetery.
