1969Mrs. Curtis Poland of Winterset, a life-time resident of Madison county, died Saturday Jan. 11, at Memorial hospital. She was 80 years of age.
Mrs. Poland was the former Sula Mae Hermon, daughter of Ezra and Emretta (Beem) Hermon. She was born in Scott township Oct. 14, 1888, and spent her early life there. She graduated from Winterset High school and as a young woman she taught rural school in Madison county for 10 years.
She was married June 14, 1916 to Curtis Poland of Winterset. Their active years together were spent in farming. His death occurred March 12, 1960.
She was a member of the First Christian church of Winterset.
Mrs. Poland leaves a son, Phillip Poland of Carroll; two daughters, Mrs. Clarence Wildin of St. Charles and Mrs. A. R. Cullen of Crystal Lake; 20 grandchildren; one great grandchild; and a sister, Mrs. Ethel Holmes of Sacramento, Calif. An infant son preceded her in death, also.
Funeral services were held Monday from the First Christian church in Winterset. The pastor, the Rev. William E. Bowles, officiated at the services. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
