ROBERT MERRIFIELD

Robert "Bob" Merrifield, 62, of Winterset, died from cancer Oct. 1, 2004, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Funeral services were held Monday Oct. 4, at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset with Pastor Robert Barrick officiating. Burial was at Van Meter Cemetery with military honors performed by Veterans of Foreign Post 8142 and American Legion Post 184 both of Winterset.

Bob Merrifield was born Sept. 29, 1942 in Des Moines to Charles and Margaret "Peggy" (Baldwin) Merrifield. He was a 1961 graduate of Technical High School in Des Moines. Following graduation, he served in the United States Army for three years.

His marriage to Laraine Rae Shull took place June 26, 1965 at Easton Place Methodist Church in Des Moines. Bob was employed for 31 years at Firestone in Des Moines, retiring in 2000. He also farmed and worked part time at Air Cooled Engines in Winterset. He had resided in the Winterset area since 1976. He previously lived in Runnels and Des Moines. He was a member of the Winterset Square Dancers, Winterset First United Methodist Church and Winterset Kiwanis.

He was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his wife, Laraine of Winterset.; his mother, Peggy Merrifield of Winterset; two sons; Chuck Merrifield of Winterset and Rick Merrifield of Olivehurst, Calif., a brother, Mike Merrifield of Winterset; and five grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare in Winterset.
