Mrs. Blanche L. Tilton, a lifetime resident of Madison County, died last Thursday, December 27, 1973, at the Villa West Care Center in Winterset. She was 85 years of age.
Mrs. Tilton was born in Madison County on May 25, 1888 the daughter of A. L. and Maggie Halliwill Martin. She was married to Homer G. Tilton on December 24, 1913 at the home of her parents in Winterset.
Mrs. Tilton had been a rural school teacher for seven years prior to her marriage.
She was active in a large number of community activities and clubs, and had held the position of president of the Iowa Red Cross Council, president of the Women's Relief Corps, president of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, and president of the Women's Society of Christian Service.
In addition Mrs. Tilton was a 50-year member of the Columbian Club, and was a 50-year member of the Red Cross. She served with the Red Cross during World War I and was a Chairman during World War II.
She was affiliated with the First United Methodist Church of Winterset.
Mrs. Tilton is survived by a foster son, Dean Evans of Des Moines, as well as 13 nieces and nephews and several distant cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one brother, and one son who died in infancy.
Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 29 at the Collins Funeral Home in Wintersest, with the Rev. Walter A. Samp officiating.
Burial was in Winterset Cemetery.
