Walter R. Vance, Illinois

Capt. Walter R. Vance, a retired United Airlines captain, died peacefully with his family at his side on July 11, 2003. The cause of death was congestive heart failure.

During his three and one-half years in World War II, he was awarded the Air Force distinguished Flying Cross and four Air Force medals.

He was born in Winterset, Iowa, March 29, 1918, to Edna and Raymond Vance. Devoted husband to Dorothy, to whom he was married for 59 years. They were married at St. Joseph's Church in Winterset. He had lived in the LaGrange Park, Ill., area since 1950.

Beloved father of David (Wendy) Vance of Waiohinu, Hawaii, and Mary Anne (Mark Jaffe) Vance of Seattle, Wash.; survived by his sister, Helen Dick of Lakeport, Calif.; grandfather to Laura Collins, Michael Jaffe, Demian and Sam Vaughs; dear uncle to Elizabeth Ryan and her sons, Noah and Daniel Schuchman of Minneapolis, Minn. His love and compassion extended far beyond the bounds of his immediate family to include many nieces and nephews on both the Vance and the Cunningham sides.

Walter maintained a wonderful sense of humor and wit throughout his life. His love of science and infinite curiosity inspired his family and friends. He donated his body to medical science in keeping with his desire to help others.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Winterset.

Walter Vance, Illinois

Walter R. Vance, 85, of LaGrange Park, Ill., died July 11, 2003.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winterset with Father Chris Hartshorn celebrating. Burial will be at Winterset Cemetery immediately following the service. The family will greet friends at the St. Joseph Catholic Church Parish Hall following the committal.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Madison County Historical Society, Winterset.

Arrangements were handled by Ochiltree Funeral Service & Aftercare of Winterset.
