Elmer Coffman, Winterset

Elmer Smith Coffman, 86, of Winterset died of cardiac arrest Feb. 14, 1999, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, at Foursquare Gospel Church in Winterset with Pastor Terry S. Kerr officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant View Cemetery near Macksburg in Webster Township, Madison County. Visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17 , at Oak Grove Community Church, where the family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m.

Elmer Smith Coffman was born Jan. 6, 1913, in Madison County to Thomas Elmer and Myrtle Elsie (Smith) Coffman. He was a graduate of Macksburg High School. He married Thelma Eivins on Aug. 18, 1934, in rural Macksburg. A life-time resident of Madison County, he was a retired farmer. Elmer was a member of Farm Bureau, Madison County Fair Board (33 years) and the Oak Grove Community Church. He also had been a 4-H leader, secretary and treasurer for the former Webster Township School board and taught Sunday School for many years.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Don E. Coffman (wife Eunice) of Honduras, Central American, and T. Edgar Coffman (wife Gayle) of West Des Moines; one daughter, Sandra M. Wagner (husband George) of Des Moines; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Oak Grove Community Church or Escuela El Sembrador Relief Fund.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Funeral Home in Winterset.
