Benjamin Calvin Blythe

Benjamin Calvin Blythe was born in West Moreland County, Pennsylvania, February 11, 1849, moved with his parents to Iowa in 1851, locating near Mount Pleasant.

After the death of the mother, the father Benjamin Blythe moved his family in 1866 to Monroe township near Kasson, Madison county, when the roads were trails across the fenceless prairies. Here he grew to manhood. He married Clara Underwood who died in 1877 leaving to his care a son Henry, another son Robert, died in infancy. In 1882, he married Lida Terry who was a mother to the motherless boy and a real homemaker. They made their home in Nebraska, Greenfield and Des Moines. After her death in 1912 he spent most of his time in Winterset or nearby until two years ago when he went to Colorado Springs, Colorado, to live with his son Harry, who with his wife survive him. He joined the Methodist church years ago.

Cal as he was known all over the county was a carpenter, built many of the old school houses in Monroe and Grand River townships. He was proud of these buildings because they were built honestly and well. A life of more than 83 years has ended. The chief characteristics of which were industry and integrity.

Family affection was another striking trait of this man showing in the close fellowship with his son. The early loss of the mother, drew the children close together, formed an unusually close attachment between this man and his sister, Jane who survives him and at whose home he passed away.
