MYRTILLA M. BAKER

Funeral services for Myrtilla M. Baker, 84, were held Sat. October 26 at Macksburg United Methodist Church, Macksburg, with the Rev. Edwin Van Holland officiating. Mrs. Baker died October 22 at Bethesda Care Center where she was a resident.

She was born September 30, 1907 in Clay County, S.D. to Carrie (Mayer) and Ora Witt and moved with her parents to the Macksburg area in Madison County in 1910 where she resided for most of her life. She graduated from Macksburg High School and attended the University of South Dakota and Simpson College. She married Clarence Baker June 3, 1933 in Grant City, Mo. She was a retired teacher, having taught school in South Dakota and Madison and Adair counties for more than 30 years. She was known for her contributions in the field of music and in the 1930s directed the Madison County Women's chorus which was recognized by invitation to a national competition in Chicago. Before failing health, she was an active member of the Macksburg Methodist Church and UMW, Women's Relief Corps, J.D. Craven #322 of Macksburg, Macksburg Garden Club, Clover Club in the Ord Community and Hawthorne Rebekah Lodge #350.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Surviving are a son, Donald of Branson, Mo., a brother, Robert, of Macksburg; a sister Helena Beatty of Butler, Pa.; four granddaughters and two great-granddaughters.

Burial was at Moon Cemetery, Macksburg.
