Ernest Raymond Stowell, 81, of Winterset died Oct. 4, 2002, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. today (Wednesday, Oct. 9) at the First Baptist Church in Winterset with Phil Cannon officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.
Ernest Stowell was born Oct. 17, 1920, to Herbert M. and Ona J. (Beaman) Stowell of Glendon. On Dec. 28, 1940, he married Dorothy Hohertz in Centerville. An auctioneer and retired Madison County Sale Barn manager, Ernest had lived in Winterset for 54 years, having previously resided in Greenfield. He was a member of the Union State Bank Board (38 years), Madison County Historical Society (eight years), Madison County Cattlemen's Association, Madison County Pork Producers and Greenfield Gospel Chapel. He also was a past Rotary member and Sale Barn Auction Association president.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers (one in infancy), two grandsons and a son-in-law.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Winterset; two sons, John D. Stowell of Winterset and Roger D. Stowell of Des Moines; a daughter, Shirley J. Mobley of Sergeant Bluff, a brother, Herbert Stowell (wife Maurine) of Littleton, Colo.; a sister, Helen Hohertz of Montrose, Calif.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset.
