Funeral services for Dorothy Ruth Meyer, 90, Winterset, were held Thurs., May 30 at the First United Presbyterian Church, with burial in the Winterset Cemetery, the Rev. David Bauer officiating.

Dorothy Ruth Shambaugh was born Feb. 18, 1901, the first of seven children of William and Carrie May Newlon Shambaugh, Booneville.

A lifelong resident of Madison County, Dorothy married Alvin Meyer December 29, 1923 in ceremonies at Booneville.

She taught in country schools during the 1920s. She also helped her husband farm and run a chain of family gas stations and other businesses - two restaurants, a bowling alley and a grocery store and helped raise five children.

Widowed after 44 years of marriage, Dorothy later met and married retired Congressman John R. Hansen. After Mr. Hansen died, Dorothy Meyer spent her remaining years at her Winterset area home.

Dorothy Ruth Meyer, a former delegate to the National Democratic Convention and one-time legislative candidate, also was past president of both the Iowa Democratic Women and the Des Moines Women's Club, as well as active in both the Evangelical United Brethren Church, Van Meter and the First United Presbyterian Church, Winterset.

Suvivors include two sons; Carroll Meyer of Kansas City, Mo., and Frederick Meyer of Tucson, Ariz.; three daughters, Marjorie Bucklew of Layfayette, Cal., Barbara McWilliams of Rancho-Sante Fe, Cal., and Karen Silliman of Winterset; four brothers; Ralph, of Winterset; Hubert, New Jersey; Phil, Los Angeles, Cal.; and Robert Shambaugh, Ohio. She also is survived by one sister, Mary Collins of Los Angeles, Cal.; 18 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.
