Phillip Gale Newton, 76, of Winterset died of a heart attack March 13, 2003, at his residence.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 17, at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset with Pastor Robert Barrick officiating. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery with military rites performed by American Legion Post 184 and V.F.W. Post 8142, both of Winterset.

Phil Newton was born Oct. 5, 1926, in Winterset to Cady L. and Mary Grace (Aikin) Newton. He married Lois (Silverthorn) Newton, who preceded him in death. He later married Lucretia Storrs Drake on Oct. 29, 1976, in Winterset. Phillip, who was retired, had worked as an electrician at Jackson Electric for 20 years and as a custodian at the Madison County Courthouse for over 10 years. A lifetime resident of Winterset, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church and American Legion Post 184, both of Winterset, and was currently serving on the Veterans Affairs Board for Madison County. He also was a United States Navy veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Eva Newton; both wives; two brothers, Donald Newton and Paul Newton, and a grandson.

He is survived by a son, Greg Newton of Norwalk; three daughters, Carol Crall and Kathy Osborn, both of Ankeny, and Phyllis Vore of Ames; three stepsons, John P. Drake of Oklahoma, James L. Drake of Carson and Jerry W. Drake of Winterset, a brother Kenneth Newton of Greenfield; seven grandchildren; 11 stepgrandchildren; five great- grandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren.

Funeral arraangements were handled by Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset.
