Donald A. Newton, a lifetime resident of Winterset, died Friday, Feb. 3, 1981, at Madison County Memorial Hospital. He was 67 years old.
He was born in Madison County on July 21, 1913. His parents were Cady L. Newton and Mary Grace Aikin.
He graduated from Winterset High School in 1932 and took odd jobs around the community before being drafted in 1941. It was in the army that Don got his first postal experience, serving as a mail clerk for the 168th Regiment of the 34th Division.
After his discharge, he returned to Winterset and started as a substitute postal clerk and carrier in 1946.
In 1947 he married Anna Jane Abbott in Zion, Iowa. They had two daughters, Mary Ann and Donna.
In 1958 he began rural mail delivery on Route Three, Winterset - a route he carried for over 20 years, retiring on Dec. 24, 1980.
He was a member of the Past District Commander's Club of the American Legion, Evening Star Lodge No. 43, Order of the Eastern Star No. 124, National Letter Carriers Association, and past member of the Lions Club. He was past commander of the local American Legion post. In 1980 he received a lifetime membership in the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Paul.
He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mary Ann Newton of Austin, Texas and Donna Devine of Des Moines; and two brothers, Kenneth Newton of Greenfield and Phillip Newton of Winterset.
Services were held Tuesday, Feb. 17 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Byron Ayers officiating. Military graveside services were provided by Green Rogers Post No. 184 of the American Legion. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery.
