W. D. PATTERSON DIES AT 88 YEARS

Death Occurred Last Thursday at Memorial Hospital in Winterset

W. D. Patterson, formerly a prominent Madison County farmer, died Thursday Sept. 4 at the Memorial hospital in Winterset. He was 88 years of age.

Mr. Patterson was a native of Pennsylvania, where he was born in Greene county on Dec. 27, 1863 a son of John D. and Amanda Patterson. His early life was spent on a farm near Waynesburg. When he was 21 years of age, he came to Iowa, settling in Madison county.

His active life was spent in farming, and he was known as a community leader. He was a member of numerous social and civic organizations. He helped organize the Farmers elevator in Winterset, and served as director for many years. He did organizational work for the Farm Bureau in several Iowa counties and assisted in organizing Iowa State college short courses in farm and home management in this county. During the first World War he was active in the Red Cross service program.

In early life he had joined the Methodist church, but after moving to Madison county, he transferred to the Winterset Church of Christ. He was an elder of the church here for many years, and was chairman of the board when the present church building was erected.

Mr. Patterson was married Sept. 2, 1890, to Clyde Bird. They lived in Lee township for many years later moving to Scott township. Upon retiring from active farming they moved into Winterset. Mrs. Patterson died in 1928.

Surviving are a daughter; Mrs. Bird A. Wiley of Winterset; a son, Bradley Patterson of Winterset; six grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral services were held Sunday from the Anderson home for funerals, conducted by the Rev. Sherman Hanson, pastor of the Winterset Church of Christ. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
