Wednesday, June 5, 1968RAYMOND SAWYERS Dies at 64 Years
Funeral services for Raymond Sawyers, well known Douglas township farmer, were to be held this Wednesday from the First Christian church in Winterset.
Mr. Sawyers died Saturday, June 1, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, following surgery. He had been ill since April 24, and entered the hospital in Des Moines May 6.
A life-long resident of Madison County, Mr. Sawyers was born May 7, 1904, a son of Andrew and May Pope Sawyers. He began farming at an early age with his father, then by himself, continuing in farming and stock raising until his death. He was active in many areas of community work. He served as director and chairman of the Farmers Cooperative association at Winterset, and as treasurer, vice chairman and chairman of the rural electrification cooperative at Greenfield.
He was married July 1, 1927, to Katherine L. Kuntz. With the exception of three years in Webster township, their life was spent in Douglas township, until they moved to Winterset in December, 1967.
He was a member of the First Christian church of Winterset, serving as chairman of the board and deacon. At the time of his death, he was an elder and Sunday school teacher.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Keith, of Winterset; three grandsons, Douglas, Bruce and Mark; and two brothers, Claire and Carl Sawyers both of Winterset.
Officiating at the service this Wednesday was the Rev. William E. Bowles, pastor of the church, assisted by the Rev. Paul Hann of Des Moines. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
