Winterset, Iowa
Wednesday, July 19, 1964FLORA SEERLY, 100 Died Thursday
One of Madison county's two centenarians, Flora Seerly, died Thursday, July 2, 1964, a little more than two months after attaining that distinction. She had reached the age of 100 years on April 27. Her death occurred at a Winterset nursing home.
That leaves Mrs. Myrtle McClure of Earlham as the only 100 year-old resident of Madison County.
Miss Seerly was a life-long resident of Madison County, in fact she had never been outside the State of Iowa. She was born of pioneer parents, William and Mary Messersmith Seerly, on a farm north of Worthington church in Madison Township, on April 27, 1864. She was one of 14 children, and was the last surviving member of that family.
Miss Seerly spent the first 83 years of her life on the home farm where she was born. Only two of her brothers and sisters married, and the others remained on the home farm, sharing the work. In 1947 she moved to Winterset. In recent years she had lived in nursing homes.
She was a long-time member of the Worthington Methodist Church.
Nearest surviving relatives include a nephew, L. A. Seerly of Nebraska, and a niece, Mrs. Mabel Holliday of Greenfield.
Funeral services were held Saturday from the Collins Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. John C. Porath, pastor of the First Methodist Church of Winterset. Burial was made in the Worthington Cemetery.
Transcriber's note: Transcribed as published, last name is "Seerley".
