HENRY POPE DIED THANKSGIVING DAY
Native of Germany Lived 58 Years in Madison County

John Henry Pope, a resident of Madison county for 58 years, and one of this community's most respected citizens, died Thanksgiving day, Nov. 25, at a Winterset nursing home. He was 94 years of age.

Mr. Pope was a native of Germany, where he was born in the city of Oldenberg on Aug. 17, 1854. He came to the United States when he was 16 years old, settling at Homestead, in Story county.

He was married Dec. 24, 1881, at Des Moines, to Ella Meyerhoff. They moved to Madison county in 1890 and settled on a farm in Monroe township where Mr. Pope spent all the remaining years of his life. Mrs. Pope died here in 1897.

Mr. Pope was a successful farmer, and took an active interest in the civic and school affairs of his community over a long period of years.

He is survived by a son, Herman Pope of Rosemead, Calif.; and two daughters, Bessie Pope, with whom he made his home, and Mrs. Carrie Williams of Winterset. He also leaves two granddaughters, four great grandchildren, and a brother, who still lives in Germany.

Funeral services were held Sunday from Anderson's home for funerals in charge of the Rev. Claude Calkins, pastor of the Lorimor Methodist church. Burial was made in the Barney cemetery.
