Merl LeRoy Kerns, 82, of Macksburg died Aug. 22, 2003, at Winterset Care Center North.
Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 25, at the Macksburg United Methodist Church with Pastor Sandra Smith officiating. Burial was at Greenfield Cemetery.
Merl Kerns was born July 9, 1921, in Madison County to Verlin LeRoy and Fern Olive (Bond) Kerns. On July 1, 1943, he married Elizabeth Ann Wineinger of Lorimor. A lifelong resident of Madison County, he had resided in the Macksburg area for the past 41 years. Merl was a United States Army veteran, serving during World War II. Following his discharge, he farmed in southern Madison County, drove a truck for several years and was a heavy equipment operator for Madison County for approximately 20 years. He was a member of American Legion Post 350 of Brayton and the Macksburg United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Maurice Kerns, Russ Kerns and Gerald Kerns; a sister, Dolores Henderson; and a granddaughter, Amy Kerns.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Kerns of Macksburg; three daughters, Janet Brandenburg of Huntsville, Ark., Patty Dolan of New Virginia and Mylissa BeLieu of Indianola; a son, Jon Kerns of Atlantic; a brother, Ronnie Kerns of Winterset; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be directed to a memorial fund that has been established by the family.
Funeral arrangements were handled by Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home of Leon and Lamoni.
